Living with Purpose During a Distracted World: How God Motivates Us to Better

In the era of content and distractions, it can be hard for us to take a step back and sit in silence. Especially when you’re young and you’re so used to the distraction, it makes you feel fidgety and uncomfortable when you’re not holding your phone. But when you’re eyes are constantly on the screen, your mind always on the worldly things that you see on the Internet, and your heart isn’t in the right place it’s supposed to be, then you’ll be pulled down by the world and putting a wall around yourself when God is trying to let Himself in.

It can be difficult to remove yourself from the comfort of distractions. We understand that it’s what you’re used to. But sometimes, what we’re used to is not healthy for us, both mentally, physically, and yes, even spiritually.

You might be used to your friends saying, “Yes, I can’t live without social media,” or “I can’t live for a second without the Internet.” And perhaps, you, yourself, have embodied that supposed “norm.” As a result, you move through life aimlessly without a goal or purpose. Sometimes, you just live life as presented to you on the media because that’s how we’re supposed to live now. We live through the way society wants us to live as portrayed by the media.

But have you stopped to think about what God calvary road students wants us to do? Sure, reading a lot of self-help books does help us to be better. But God has also provided us a self-help guide in His scripture.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

- Romans 12:2

Although the world may say different things, bind your principle in the teachings of God. It can be difficult to stay still and listen to Him, especially nowadays when technology has been innovated to keep your attention on it constantly. However, like many of Jesus’ disciples, this is but another obstacle you face in faith before finding your purpose.

All worldly objects are attractive, and the path of faith is an arduous road for any Calvary Road student. But when you lift up your worries, insecurities, and difficulties to God, then just like you have trained your mind to rely on technology, you can also retrain your mind to rely on God.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

- Matthew 6:33

As mentioned before, the path of faith and righteousness is an arduous road. We are only human after all. Working toward perfection and service to God’s purpose has its challenges. Hence, don’t be discouraged when there are a few bumps in the road. Remember Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

As a Calvary Road student and being in a generation where technology has become a big part of your life, take the time to detach from the Internet and turn to God. Like any father, He, too, deserves your time and attention. Listen to His teachings and reflect on them.
